What is NSAR-B?

Form N-SAR was the semi-annual and annual census report of registered investment companies. NSAR-B is the annual version, filed for the full fiscal year; NSAR-A covered the first half. It collected operational data in a fixed numbered-item format: service providers, fees, brokerage commissions, share sales and redemptions, and other fund statistics.

The SEC rescinded Form N-SAR in its 2016 reporting modernization. Funds moved to Form N-CEN (annual census) and Form N-PORT (portfolio holdings), with N-CEN filings starting in 2018. The last NSAR-B filings arrived in 2019.
