FMP API vs SecFeed API: SEC Filings Data Compared (2026)
Financial Modeling Prep is a broad market data API with SEC data inside. SecFeed covers only SEC filings, in more depth. Plans, licensing and which one fits.
Financial Modeling Prep (FMP) is a wide market data API: prices, fundamentals, estimates, news, and SEC data as one part of the bundle. SecFeed does one thing: SEC filings. Which is better depends on whether filings are your side dish or your main course.
The short answer
- Choose FMP if you need prices, ratios, estimates or global fundamentals in one place, and the SEC data you need is insider trades, filing lists and as reported financials.
- Choose SecFeed if SEC filings are the point: 13F on the cheapest plan, 8-K items, 10-K sections, full text search, executive pay and dozens of other forms, with the right to show the data in your app.

Where FMP is better
- Everything that is not a filing. Real time and historical prices, technical indicators, analyst estimates, DCF models, news, transcripts, crypto, forex and congressional trades. SecFeed has none of that.
- Throughput. 300 to 3,000 calls per minute on paid plans.
- Global. UK, Canada and global fundamentals on the higher plans.
Where SecFeed is better
- 13F on every plan. FMP puts institutional holdings on its top personal plan. SecFeed includes them from free.
- Depth inside the filings. Every 8-K item, 10-K and 10-Q sections as text, full text search since 2001, executive compensation, Form D, Form 144, 13D/13G, fund filings and enforcement data.
- Display rights at a public price. $79 a month to show data in your product, compared with a separate licensing agreement.
- Sources attached. Every record carries the SEC accession number, so you can check any value against the filing.
Use both
A common setup is FMP for prices and ratios, plus SecFeed for the filings behind them. They join on ticker and CIK.
When SecFeed is the wrong choice
If your app is a stock screener or a portfolio tracker that mainly needs prices and fundamentals, FMP alone will serve you better. SecFeed only makes sense when the filings themselves matter.
Example
Every 13F holder of a stock for a quarter:
import os, requests
r = requests.get("https://secfeedapi.com/v1/form-13f/holdings",
params={"cusip": "67066G104", "period": "06-30-2026", "size": 100},
headers={"Authorization": f"Bearer {os.environ['SECFEED_KEY']}"}, timeout=60)
print(r.json())
