Overview

USAspending.gov records every federal award: who received it, which agency paid, how much, for what and where. Its API is open but verbose, with field names that change by award type and a recipient search that returns names without ids.

The Federal Awards API returns one consistent shape for contracts, IDVs, grants and loans, adds recipient search with ids and UEIs, spending totals by agency, recipient, NAICS or state, and tags each award with the listed company behind the recipient when there is one, so you can go from an award to a ticker.

What you get

Built for developers who would rather not parse EDGAR.

Every award type

Contracts, IDVs, grants, loans, direct payments and other assistance since FY2008.

Recipient search with ids

Find a company by name and get its id, UEI and whether it is a parent or a subsidiary.

Spending totals

Group spending by agency, sub-agency, recipient, NAICS, PSC, CFDA program, state or country.

Listed company tags

secCompany on each award names the CIK and ticker when the recipient or its parent is listed.

Endpoints

Authenticate with Authorization: Bearer YOUR_KEY. Responses are JSON.

FAQ

Where does the data come from?

USAspending.gov, the official source for federal spending. SecFeed queries it live and caches answers for up to a day.

How far back does it go?

Award searches cover fiscal year 2008 onward, which is where USAspending's search history starts.

Why is there no total count?

USAspending pages results without a total. Responses say hasNext instead, and you page with from and size.
