Form N-CEN is the annual census of registered investment companies. It replaced Form N-SAR in 2018 and is filed in XML, so it answers operational questions about every fund in a structured way: who the custodian is, who audits the fund, which brokers it paid, who lends its securities.
For ETFs it adds authorized participants, creation unit sizes and listing details. For the service provider market it is the most complete public map of who services which funds.
Registered management investment companies and unit investment trusts, including ETFs. Face-amount certificate companies also file.
Within 75 days after the end of the fund's fiscal year.
