What is N-8F?

Form N-8F is the application a registered investment company files to stop being registered under the Investment Company Act. It is filed after a fund has liquidated, merged into another fund or never made a public offering.

The form records what happened to the fund's assets and shareholders, who paid the expenses of winding down, and whether any litigation or liabilities remain. It is the end of a fund's paper trail on EDGAR.

Who files

Registered investment companies that have ceased to be investment companies, usually after a liquidation or merger.

When it is filed

After the fund has distributed its assets or merged. The SEC issues an order declaring that the company has ceased to be an investment company.

Is N-8F useful for survivorship bias?
