Since the JOBS Act, companies can submit their IPO registration statement to the SEC in draft form, confidentially, and work through the SEC's comments before anyone sees it. The drafts appear on EDGAR as DRS and DRS/A once the company files publicly, at least 15 days before its roadshow.
A batch of DRS filings appearing together, followed by an S-1 or F-1, is often the first public sign of an IPO.
