What is a CUSIP number?
A CUSIP is a nine character code that identifies a North American security, such as a company's common stock or one of its bond issues. The first six characters identify the issuer, the next two identify the specific security, and the last character is a check digit calculated from the other eight.
Where this data comes from
This tool reads the SEC's Official List of Section 13(f) Securities, which the SEC publishes every quarter. It lists the US listed stocks, ETFs, options and some convertible notes that institutional managers must report on Form 13F. It does not include municipal bonds, most corporate bonds, mutual funds or private securities. For those, check your brokerage statement, FINRA or MSRB's EMMA.
How the check digit works
Letters become numbers (A = 10, B = 11 and so on), every second value is doubled, the digits of all the values are added up, and the check digit is the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10. Enter any CUSIP above to validate it.
