Form S-6 is the Securities Act registration statement for unit investment trusts (UITs). Sponsors use it to register new trust series, such as fixed portfolios of equities, municipal bonds or ETF-like trusts, and insurance companies have used it for certain variable life separate accounts organized as UITs.
Because UIT sponsors launch new series frequently, S-6 volume is high and repetitive: many filings are near identical prospectuses for a new series in an existing program.

Before units of a new trust or series are offered to the public, with amendments as the offering is updated.
