What is 40-OIP?

The EDGAR Filer Manual describes 40-OIP as applications under the Investment Company Act reviewed by the Office of Insurance Products. In practice the filers are insurance companies and their separate accounts asking for orders, most commonly to substitute one underlying fund for another inside variable annuity and variable life contracts.

A single application often covers many separate accounts at once, which is why one filing can appear under dozens of CIKs.

Who files

Insurance companies and their separate accounts, together with affiliated funds and advisers.

When it is filed

When an insurer seeks an order, for example before replacing an underlying fund in its variable contracts.
