What is 40-17G?

Investment Company Act Rule 17g-1 requires every registered management investment company to carry a fidelity bond protecting it against larceny and embezzlement by officers and employees who have access to its securities or funds. Submission type 40-17G is how the fund files a copy of that bond with the SEC, under Rule 17g-1(g)(1).

Filings usually include the bond or rider, the board resolution approving its form and amount, and for joint bonds the agreement that allocates premiums and recoveries among the covered funds. Claims or settlements under a bond are filed separately as 40-17GCS.

Who files

Registered management investment companies, often several funds under one joint bond.

When it is filed

After the bond is obtained or renewed, typically once a year, and when the coverage amount changes.
