What is 40-17F2?

When a management investment company maintains custody of its own securities, Investment Company Act Rule 17f-2 requires an independent public accountant to verify those holdings by actual examination, at least three times a year. The accountant's certificate is filed on Form N-17f-2, recorded on EDGAR as 40-17F2.

Most filers are funds and advisers with self-custodied assets, so the series is a direct view of which funds rely on self-custody.

Who files

Registered management investment companies that keep custody of their own securities, through their independent accountants.

When it is filed

After each examination, at least three times each fiscal year, two of them without prior notice to the fund.
